FAMILY GROUP RECORD OF
BRIAN CROWTHER AND
ALICE GRIFFITH

Brian Crowther was born in about 1590 of Knighton. He married Alice Griffith. Alice was the daughter of William Griffith.  Brian was listed as an armiger, or person entitled to use a coat of arms.

Brian and Alice had the following children:

1. Brian, born about 1612 of Knighton; also shown as an armiger; in 1639 and 1645 he was High Sheriff for Radnorshire; buried 15 November 1655 in Knighton; married Alice Price. He had children: Anna (1633), Elizabeth (1642), Brian (1647-1648), Richard (1649), and Ursilla (buried 1656).  Transactions of the Shropshire Archeological and Natural History Society describes him: "Brian Crowther was an influential and active Royalist, and Justice of the Peace for the County of Radnor, of which county he was High Sheriff in 1639 and 1645. He was a gentleman of unblemished respectability and honor; many arbritration cases were referred to his decision, and particularly a tedious and prolonged litigation between Smalman and John Crowther, his relative, at the instance of the Archbishop of Canterbury. He married the sister of Mr. Herbert Price, of Brecknock...He strenously supported the royal cause, and consequently was fined by the rebellious parliament for his delinquency." Brian continued his royalist support, and in 1655 Thomas Lewis, "along with a Colonel Vaughan and the unreconstructed Radnorshire Royalists Brian Crowther and Howell Lloyd, was arrested on suspicion of complicity in the plots of March 1655 and lodged in Hereford Castle". (Welsh Journals Online)  Brian died in November of that same year.

Knighton is a town on the River Teme that straddles the Welsh-English border. A small portion of the town is in Shropshire. Knighton prospered as a wool trading town in the 15th century. The town guide describes Knighton's history:"The Marches, as this border country is known, has a long history of trouble and conflict ranging from small raids to pitched battles...Knighton had a chequered career as a frontier town, being sacked and burnt by the Welsh a number of times, the last recorded sacking being by Owain Glyndwr at the time of his victory over an English army led by Sir Edmund Mortimer at the nearby Battle of Pilleth in June 1402. Knighton then settled down to a quieter time as a market town and commercial centre for this part of Radnorshire."

CROWTHERS OF KNIGHTON

The Crowthers are found in early records of Knighton and nearby Ludlow. The Welsh Medieval Database Primarily of Nobility and Gentry records Crowthers in Knighton into the 1200s. Knighton is called Trefyclo in Welsh.

Adam Crowther of Knighton is mentioned in a bond of 26 April 1600.

Another document, or feoffment, 17 December 1616, mentions Adam Crowther: "Of manor or dw. house wherein David Tricke lately dwelled now in occupation of Richard Colhurst alias Busshope in the town of Knighton between the house of Adam Crowther gent. on W. and the new dw. house of Edward Mason on E., and adjoining the high street on N." There are similarities between this description and the description of our Adam Crowther's house in 1649, and it may be the same house.

Surname Meaning

This interesting name, with spellings Crowder, Crowther, Crother, and Crewther, is of early medieval origins. It is occupational and describes a musician. It derives from the 12th century word “croude”, related to the early Welsh “crwth”, meaning a crowd. This however was not a collection of people gathered together, but an early and popular bowed stringed instrument, bearing some resemblance to the later fiddle or even a violin.  (www.surnamedb.com)
