Ann Dodwell was born in about 1663 of Souldern in Oxfordshire. She
married Richard Dodwell of the city of Oxford in 1686.
The Dodwells in Oxford were related to the Dodwells in Souldern.
“The family of Dodwell, yeomen, of good local position, were
resident in Souldern through two centuries and more…John Dodwell
was churchwarden in 1639 and 1643. Other members of this family
served that office from 1647 to 1733. They were connected with a
family of the same name in Oxford.” (History of the Present
Deanery of Bicester, Oxon by James Charles Bloomfield) Souldern
is about twenty miles north of Oxford. Ann and Richard's oldest son
John was christened 25 September
1687 in Souldern, although the family was living in the city of
Oxford. Their son Thomas was buried as a two year-old
child in Souldern in 1694.
The Souldren parish registers started late, in 1667, so there is no
record of Ann's christening. The first Dodwell christening recorded
in Souldern was for Winifred Dodwell, the daughter of John and Mary
Dodwell on 25 June 1669. No other Dodwell christenings are recorded
in the 1660s or 1670s.
Souldern
The only mention of an Ann in the right time period in the parish
register was in the burial record of a stranger in Souldern: "27
June 1679 Charles King stranger affidavit by Ann
Dodwell d. John Jr before Thomas Cobb Aug 13".

Note in the Souldern parish register: "August 13th 1679 Ann
Dodwell ye daughter of John Dodwell junr brought an affidavit
written under ye hand of Tho: Cobb
that Charles King was buryed in woollin only, which was
delivered to ye Minister and by him registered ye soresd 13 of
Aug 1679"
Ann acted as a witness for the will of John Dodwell in 1683. That
John was not her father, as shown by the bequests he made in the
will (he mentioned daughters Mary and Elizabeth), but the will does
mention Mr. John Dodwell, his kinsman: "And should my sonne in
law George Colgrave refuse taking my land upon the considerations
above mentioned then I doe desire my loveing kinsman Mr. John
Dodwell to make sale of the land and pay those legacies above
mentioned as far as the land and his money will goe". John
Dodwell was called "esquire" in a mention of Winifred's marriage.
Ann Dodwell and Mary Dodwell were witnesses for the will. This may
be Ann and her sister Mary, or her mother Mary.
Will of John Dodwell of Souldern, 1684: "Sealed and delivered
the day and yeare abovesd in the presence of Mary Dodwell Ann

FAMILY GROUP RECORD OF WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH DODWELL
William Dodwell was born in about 1550 of Souldern, the son of
Thomas and Alice Dodwell. He married Elizabeth.
William was mentioned in a history of the Souldern area: “The
family of Dodwell, yeoman, of good local position, were resident
in Souldern through two centuries and more. The name first occurs
in 1523-4, among the sub-collectors of the lay subsidy of that
year. William Dodwell was an old inhabitant living in
1584.” (History of the Present Deanery of Bicester, Oxon)
“From a document of the year 1585, preserved in the archdeacon’s
court at Oxford, it seems that William Dodwell, of Souldern, got
into trouble because he was thought to have in his possession some
of the objects used in the old services. (The Athenaeum) Several
of the churchwardens were called to give an accounting of the
objects missing from the church: “He denies that he hathe enie
churche goods in his custodie or knoweth wheare enie is saving one
sepulchre which is turned into a cubberd.” (History of Fritwell
and Souldern) The charges were dismissed against him.
William was a witness for the will of John Penn in 1613.
Mark of William Dodwell, 1613
William, and his son John, with other freeholders in Souldern, was
