Richard Dodwell was born in about 1661 of Appleton. Berkshire, the son of Richard Dodwell and Jane Butler. He married Ann Dodwell of Souldern in 1686 (Dodwell was also her maiden name.). She was the daughter of John and Mary Dodwell of Souldern, Oxfordshire.


Richard was an attorney in the city of Oxford.


Richard was also a freeholder in Appleton with Eaton in Berkshire.

Richard died and was buried 20 December 1722 in Appleton. His burial was recorded in both the Oxford parish register and the Appleton parish register.

In the name of God Amen I Richard Dodwell senr of Oxford gent being in good health of body and of sound mind and understanding thanks be given to God tor the same but considering the uncertainty of this mortal life do make this my last will and testament and do make void all other wills by me made. And first I commend my soul to Almighty God who gave it hoping this the merits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to have remission of all my sins and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried as my dear wife shall think fit. And for that part of my worldly estate which I have left having made due provision for my children already and have to my satisfaction placed them in capacitys to provide for themselves and their familys do dispose of the same as followeth. Imprimis I give unto my wife my two leasehold tenements in Abingdon and all my interest therein to hold to her and her assignes for all such terms as are to come therein. And I give unto her and her heirs for ever my ffreehold tenement and premisses in Abingdon aforesaid in the possession of Mr ffayrebrother and all my interest therein. Also I give unto her my said wife all my leasehold tenements in Osford held from the City of Oxford and Christ Church for all such terms are to come therein being Wiggins Carpenters and Pemertons and also my interest in Allens, and the tenements of Dyes held from Magdalen College. I also give unto my said wife lease and interest in the Mighter and tenements thereto belonging held from Lincoln College. Also I give unto my said wife and her heirs for ever the tenement in the George Lane in Oxford late States and the ffreehold shop next the Mighter where Rhoda Eustane liveth the said shop being not part of the said leasehold from Lincoln College but a separte thing which I bought as a ffre4ehold. And all the rest of my Mortgages leases goods chattels and real and personal estate whatsoever I give unto my said wife forever she paying my debts. Item I give unto my granddaughter Mary Knap one hundred pounds to be paid at her age of one and twenty or day of marriage. And I make my wife sole executrix of this my will. Ann moved to Eynsham to be with her daughter Mary. She died in 1742, and was buried 7 November 1742 in Appleton, as "the widow Dodwell".

In the name of God Amen I Ann Dodwell of Ensham in the County of Oxford widow being in health of body and of sound and disposing mind do make this as and for my last will and testament. And first I will that all my just debts and ffuneral expences be paid and discharged. Item I give all the rest of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever both real and personal unto the sole use of my daughter Hampshire to hold unto my said daughter Hampshire her heirs and assigns for ever And I do revoke and make void all former and other will and wills by me made. And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said daughter Hampshire sole executrix of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty sixth day of December in the fourteenth year of the reign of King George the second and in the year of our Lord 1740 I Ann Dodwell. This will was provd at London before the Right Worshipfull John Prettesworth Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfull constituted the nineteenth day of ffebruary in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fforty two by the oath of Mary Hanpshire widow the esecutor named in the said will to who was granted administration of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the deceased being first sworn by commission duly to administer.


Richard and Ann had the following children:


1. John, christened 25 September 1687 in Souldern; mentioned in will of Richard Dodwell, his brother; married Constance Allmont 4 September 1713 in Kidlington or Shipton: "John Dodwell, gent. of Oxford married Constance Allmont of Oxford at Kidlington or Shipton"(Index of Oxford Diocese Marriage Bonds and Affadavits).


*2. Mary, born 5 April 1689; christened 27 April 1689 in Oxford St. Michael; married 1) John Knapp 22 June 1710 in Horspath, Oxfordshire; 2) John Hampshire 23 October 1740 in Oxford St. Mary Magdalen; buried 13 March 1753 in Eynsham.

3. Richard, christened 21 September 1690 in Oxford St. Michael; occupation: lawyer: "Dodwell, Richard, s. Richard of Oxford, gent. St. Johns Coll., matric 22 Oct., aged 18; bar.-at-law, Inner Temple, 1715" (Oxford University Alumni); married Elizabeth Gleed 20 January 1715 in Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire; left a will dated 30 April 1726 in Milton, Northamptonshire. Extracts from Richard's will provides insight into family relationships: "I give and bequeath to my Sister Knapp twenty pounds per annum to be paid her at the four most usuall ffeast days in the year by my executor hereinafter mentioned without any deduction for any manner of taxes and without the intermedling of her husband and no receipt shall be sufficient which is not under own hand...Item I give unto my little niece Elizabeth Dodwell daughter of my brother John Dodwell my great tankard that was my ffathers’ but if she dye before marriage or the age of one and twenty years my will is that it shall go to her sister Anne...I give unto my kinsman Thomas Paynton of Kidlington all my study of books and presses thereunto belonging...I give to my brother John Dodwell that smal messuage yardland close and premisses which I purchased of my Lord Guilford with the appurtenances to the said John Dodwell all moneys due to me on mortgage bond otherwise paying my debts legacies and funeral expences. Item I give unto my brother John Dodwell the lease of Court Close that my mother assigned to me for two hundred pounds. Item I give to my brother John Dodwell five hundred pounds nominal stock in the bank of England which cost me eleven hundred pounds and my desire is it shall lye there as a security for the payment of my Sister Knapps’ twenty pounds per annum unless she will be satisfied with any other security that my brother will give her. Item I give to my niece Mary Knap all that bed and ffurniture belonging to my best room it being given me by my mother on that condition but my will is that it shall stand where it is till my niece Mary Knapp shall arrive to the age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen...Item I give unto my mother all moneys that she shall owe to me on note or otherwise at the time of my death but my desire is that she will give it as part of her ffortune to my niece Mary Knapp upon her day of marriage but if she shall dye before my mother and unmarried my desire is that she will give it to my niece Elizabeth Dodwell when she can spare it either in her lifetime or by her last will and testament..Item I give and bequeath to my brother John Dodwell all my personal estate and do make him full and sole executor. Richard died and was buried 21 August 1682 as "Mr. Richard Dodwell of Eton".



Richard was deceased by 1684, when their son William was apprenticed as a plumber in London. He was apprenticed to William Butler, possibly a relative of Jane.

When Jane's son Thomas died in Oxford in 1710, he named his brother Richard as his executor. Richard, an attorney, renouced the position in favor of his mother Jane Dodwell.

Jane died and was buried as a widow at the age of 94 on 27 August 1719 in Appleton.

William, christened 4 February 1668 in Appleton; in 1684 William Dodwell was apprenticed in London: "William Dodwell sonne of Richard Dodwell late of Eaton in the County of Berks yeoman decd apprentice to William Butler citizen and plumber 30 June 1684", (London Freedom of the City Admission Paper)


5. James, christened 9 October 1670 in Appleton, "son of Mr. Richard Dodwell of Eaton".


6. Anne, christened 10 May 1674 in Appleton, "daughter of Mr. Richard Dodwell".


7. Thomas, christened 10 November 1676 in Appleton.


8. Thomas, christened 12 July 1677 in Appleton; ; buried 2 April 1710 in Appleton as "Mr. Thomas Dodwell"; will 22 March 1709: "In the name of God Amen I Thomas Dodwell of Oxford being weake in body but of sound mind & understanding doe make this my will & doe hereby give unto my brother Richard Dodwell of Oxford all my goods and chattels whatsoever in trust that he paye my debts & funerall expenses & afterwards doe also give the residue to my mother who I give the same unto and I make my sayd brother Richard sole executor of this my will. In witness whereof I the sd Thomas Dodwell have hereunto set my hand & seale the 22 day of March Anno Dm 1709". Mr Richard Dodwell renounced his executor position in favor of their mother Jane Dodwell, widow, of the city of Oxford. The will was also signed by John Dodwell.
