Mary Knapp burial

Burial record for Mary Knapp in Eynsham: "Maria Knapp sepult fuit May 14"

Her husband George acted as a trustee for the marriage settlement of Hester Bolton in her marriage to John Bartholomew 1 January 1704.

Who were Mary's parents? There were two Buswell couples having children in Wescote Barton in the right time period - John and Ann Buswell, and Robert and Ann Buswell. John and Robert were brothers.

Robert died in 1708, leaving a will. The will listed his children: sons Robert, John, and Edmond, daughters Sarah Coales and Anne Edon, and grandchildren William John Coales, Mary Coales, Robert Edon, Ann Edon, and Robert Buswell (son of John). The Wescote Barton parish register has christenings for three of the children: Robert in 1656, Sarah in 1660, and Edmond in 1664. Mary was deceased by 1708, but there was no mention of any of her Bolton or Knapp children in Robert's will.

John had seven children christened in the Wescote Barton parish register. There was no christening record for Mary, and John did not leave a will.

Since Robert's will mentions many grandchildren and none of Mary's children were mentioned, it seems likely that John and Ann were Mary's parents, and her christening was not recorded.

The Buswells moved to Wescote Barton in the early 1600s: "The Buswell family was first recorded in the Bartons in 1633 when Richard Buswell held 1 yardland in Steeple Barton manor." (British History Online - Steeple Barton)

"1638 - About this time the Buswell family came to reside in Westcott Barton , being possessed of almost the entire parish besides the manor." (British History Online - Wescote Barton)

The Buswells became a prominent family in the Bartons:  "There were several prosperous yeomen or minor gentry in the village in the 17th century, notably members of the Ford, Dandridge, Buswell, and Wright families who occupied Park, Manor, and Elm Grove Farms. All those families died out during the 18th century, and their properties were sold to men from outside the parish...By 1687 Robert Buswell had acquired one or both moieties of the manor, which descended in his family until the late 18th century...The manor house of the Buswell family was Manor Farm, just outside the village on the west. It is an earlier 17th-century house in two ranges which was refronted and partly refitted late in the 18th century." (British History Online - Wescote Barton)  "The family of Buswell who for about a century and a half, resided in Westcott Barton have entirely disappeared from the parish , leaving the remains of between forty and fifty of their members deposited in the Churchyard." (Memorials of Westcott Barton)

Robert died in about 1640, leaving a will.
