Patrick Leddin of Hospital (Timothy's son):

Patrick Leddin and Nora Hourigan were married in 1830 in Hospital. Timothy Leddin was a witness.

Patrick and Nora had children Patrick (1830), William (1832), Timothy (1834), Kate (1838), James (1841), Norry (1843), and Mary (1846).

The History of Emly
mentions a Leddin in a discussion of faction fights in Emly: “Faction fights took place at funerals and fairs. The leader of the Four Year Olds was Maurice Fitzgerald…Paddy Leddan was leader of the Three Year Olds. In the 1830s a treaty was made on the summit of the hill of Knocklong between Paddy Leddan, the leader of the Three Year Olds and Maurice Fitzgerald the captain of the Four Year Olds. For nearly thirty years peace reigned.”

Patrick was mentioned in the newspaper, the Limerick Chronicle:

Limerick Chronicle, June 8, 1842

"The same active and intelligent Sub-Inspector, R. Carey, Esq., of the Bruff district, on the night of Saturday last, while on patrol discovered in the cabbage knot of a notorious character named Patrick Ledden, residing in a place called Ballycahill, most difficult of approach, nine stand of arms, in excellent order, some of Rigby’s best pistols, and a sword, identified as the one taken from Mr. Bouchier’s, of Baggotstown last winter, with five powder horns, and lots of ammunition! The arms were concealed in a wooden trough, or case, about two feet under ground, with a drain running underneath, so as to keep the damp from this subterranean armory. The well-disposed inhabitants of Bruff felt on Sunday the utmost delight at such a discovery. Ledden, with two of his companions, one of whom nick-named “the Rod” all equally nororious, and the terror of the surrounding district, are now in safe custody in Bruff."

Patrick Leddin of Hospital is mentioned in several newspaper articles:

Freeman’s Journal 19 May 1863

"The Head of the “Three-Year-Old” Left for America – Patt Leddin, who with an activity and energy peculiarly Irish brandished at fair and market the “clogh alpean,” with a family consisting of ten persons has left for America. Leddin, a brave, powerful, athletic man, had four sons who equaled himself, and who in every respect imitated the father. In fight they were fiercest – in every melee they came off the victors. They laughed at danger, and thought nothing of cut heads. They were the centre around which the rest of a party collected; but mainly through the exertions of the Redempterist Fathers, at Emly, they have sought for a field of industry in a foreign land. The femaile portion of the family were always strictly moral and industriously disposed. The flight of the Leddin family has wholly extinguished that un-meaning and nonsensical cry of “Three-years-old” in the counties of Limerick and Tipperary. Thank God that the good Archbishop, the Most Rev. Dr. Leahy’s exertions have been of benefit. – Limerick Reporter"

Two years later, Patrick's wife Honora died:.

The Tipperary Vindicator, 5 September 1865

"Obituaries – Honora, the beloved wife of Patrick Ledden of Hospital, co Limerick, aged 57."

Patrick Leddin was found living with his family in Chicago in 1870.

Patrick (born 1807) with son, William (born 1836) and Honora Leddin. Lived with James and Fanny Ledden in 1870 census.

Children: Catherine (1872), Francis (1874), Mary (1876), Margaret Ann (1878), Patrick (1880), William (1882), and Fanny Maria (1884), all children born in Chicago.

William Leddin and Timothy Leddin (Timothy's sons) were mentioned in another newspaper article:

Dublin Evening Packet, 16 July 1859

"Manslaughter – William Leddin, aged 25, Timothy Leddin, aged 30, and James Foley were severally charged with the manslaughter of Michael Hayes, at the fair of Hospital, in this county, in the month of September 1858. The evidence for the prosecution went to show that about six o’clock  upon the evening of the day in question, several faction fights took place at the fair of Hospital, which has been celebrated for such encounters from time immemorial between the factions known as “The Three-year Olds” and “The Four-year Olds”, and that in one of these unfortunate conflicts the deceased, who was one of the latter party, received a blow on the head with a stone, from the effects of which he died in a day or two afterwards. It appeared that the prisoners, upon leaving the fair, commenced to “wheel” for their faction, “The Three-year Olds” when the deceased made some offensive reply, whereupon he was struck on the head with a stick and subsequentally with a stone, which it is sworn was thrown by the elder Ledden. The jury convicted William Ledden and acquitted the other two prisoners."  William Leddin served 15 months hard labor.

"If Griffiths lists a farm in Ballycahill, Hospital, Co. Limerick, with an owner named Edmond or Edward (Ned) Leddin, that would be the farm that my godfather William (Billy) Leddin inherited from his father, Timothy Leddin, son of Da Willie. Uncle Ned...didn't have any children, lived to be 98, and willed the farm to Timothy Leddin. ...Da Willie and Aggie are buried there also, as I assume are Kate and Hannie, his two wives. Their names are not on the headstone, however. Timothy is also buried there, and he is listed on the stone. The farm Da Willie lived on, and passed to my grandfather, Edmond (Ned) Leddin, son of Da Willie, was not originally Leddin land. It was repossessed for non-payment of rent from the original owners, and Da Willie then rented it from the Lord at Kilfrush house. Da Willie was originally in the Kilballyowen/Galbally area before he took over the farm my grandfather and father grew up on. Incidentally, the farm was sold after my grandfather died. I stopped by to take a photo of the old homestead, but it is no more. It was a thatched cottage, and they tend not to last long when nobody lived in them."
