Cowper and Anna Bilby. The name is usually recorded as Cowper in
the 1600s, changing to Cooper in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
It is sometimes recorded as Cowp or Cowpe, using an old
abbreviation with the letter P having the descending part
of the p with a horizontal cross which stood for "per"
or "par".

Richard married Elizabeth in about 1646, and they settled in the
town of Shottle. Richard was a yeoman farmer.

In the name of
God Amen I Richard Cooper of Shotle in the County of
Derby yeoman being in good health and of sound and perfecte
memorie praised bee God doe make constitute ordaine and appointe
this my last will and testament in manner and forme
following/That is to say, first and principally I commend my
soule to Almighty God hopeing through the meritts death and
passion of my saviour Jesus Christ to have full and free pardon
and forgiven of all my sinnes and inherite eternall life and my
bodie I commit to the Earth to bee buried at the dispositon of
such temporall estate as it hath pleased God to bestowe upon mee
I give and dispose thereof as followes: And first I give and
bequeath unto my eldest sonne George Cooper the best
horse or mare I shall bee possed of at the tyme of my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne Humprey Cooper
the summe of ffifty poundes to bee paid him by my executrix here
after named within one yeare nexte after my decease. Item I give
and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Cooper the summe
of threescore poundes to bee paid her by my executrix here after
named within one year nexte after my decease. Item I give and
bequeath unto my daughter Anne Shipley wife of John Shipley
one shilling. Item I give and bequeath unto my loveing
wife Elizabeth Cooper my two farmes or liveings which I am
possessed of within Shotle and hould by lease under the right
honorable William Earle of Devonshire the one called the holly
seales and the other called the neither farme for and during the
remainder of the terme which I have therein if shee the said
Elizabeth shall soe longe be. Item My will and mind is and I doe
hereby give and bequeath unto my sonne Thomas Cooper
from and after the decease of my said loveing wife Elizabeth
Cooper the possession of my farme or tenement in Shotle
aforesaid called holly seale and the remainder of the said terme
therein if any shall bee after the decease of my said lo: wife.
Item my will and mind is and I doe hereby give and bequeath unto
my sonne Samuell Cooper from and after the decease of my
lo: wife Eliz Cooper the passion of my farme or tenement in
Shotle aforesd called neither farme. And the remainder of the
said terme therein if any shall bee after the decease of my sd
lo: wife. Item all the rest of my goodes chattels cattelles and
personal estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my said
loveing wife Eliz: Cooper. And I doe hereby nominate and
appointe the sd Eliz: Cooper my wife sole executrix of this my
last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and
testaments by mee heretofore made. In witness whereof I have
hereunto put my hand and seale the seaventh day of January in
the three and thirtieth yeare of the raigne of his majestie that
