In the name of God Amen I William Cooke of East Markham
in the Countie of Nottingham yeoman being weake in bodie butt of
good and perfect memorie I praise god for it doe make constitute
and ordaine this my last will and testament (revoking and
adnulling all wills and testaments formerly made by me) in
manner and forme following. First I commend my soule to God that
gave mee itt. And my bodie to bee decently buried, in the Church
of East Markham aforesaid. And as for my temporall estate of
landes and goodes I give and bequeath the same as is hereafter
appointed. First I give and bequeath unto my sonne John
Cooke tenne acres and an half of arable land being in the
three several fields of Layton in the said Countie of Nottingham
as the same is already lymitted and sett forth and fower
tethering horse gates in Layton Sickes and three doles of
meadowe lyeing in the southbound to have and to hold the same
for and during his natural life. And ymediately after the death
of him the said John Cooke then to Roger Cooke: sonne of the
said John and to his heyres forever. And alsoe I give and
bequeath unto my sonne Ellis Cooke my messuage or
tenement in Layton aforesaid and all the residue of my lands
tenements meadowe pasture closes commons hereditaments and
appurtenances in Layton aforesaid (which are not hereby given to
my sonne John Cooke: to have and to hold the same to him
the said Ellis Cooke and to his heyres forever. Alsoe I give and
bequeath unto my said sonne Ellis Cooke fower horses and
mares with their furniture. And three milch cowes. And all my
cartes plowes & harrowes. Alsoe I give and bequeath unto my
sonne Roger Cooke ffifteyne poundes of lawfull money of
England to be paid to hime in three halfe yeres next after my
decease (that is to say) every halfe yere five poundes by my
executor hereafter named. Alsoe I give to my daughter
Elizabeth the wife of William Mosse tenne shillings. And
to my daughter Margaret the wife of George Hanson tenne
shillings. The same to bee in full satisfaction of their childes
partes and filiall portions of all my goodes. Alsoe I give
bequeath unto Thomas Cooke my grandchilde the sonne of my
late sonne Thomas Cooke twentie shillings of lawfull
English money. And I doe give & bequeath all the residue of
my goodes cattell and chattels unbequeathes my debts and funeral
expences discharged unto Ellis Cooke my sonne and doe
make him the said Ellis full and sole executor of this my last
will and testament. I doe alsoe give and bequeath unto my
sonne John Cooke three poundes six shillings eight pence
of lawfull English money to bee paid unto him by my said
executor. In witness whereof I have hereunto putt my hand and
seale the one and thirtieth daye of Maye in the yere of our Lord
one thousand six hundredth ffiftie and eighte. I doe alsoe give
and bequeath unto William Cooke my grandchilde the sonne of
Ellis Cooke twentie shillings a yere to bee paid unto him
out of my lands at Layton every yere during his life upon the
nyne and twentieth daye of September. And for want of payment of
the same accordingly then my will and mynde is and I doe hereby
give the said William my grandchilde full power to enter upon
the acre of meadow in South Lound and to have hold use and
enjoye the same during his natural life: William Cooke.

This will was proved at London the thirtieth day of May in
the yere of our Lord God one thousand six hundred ffiftie and
nyne before the Judge for probate of willes and granting
administrations lawfully authorized by the oathe of Ellis the
sonne sole executor in the said will named to whom was admitted
administration of all and singular the goods chattels and debts
of the deceased he being first sworne by commission well and
truly to administer.
William and Elizabeth had the following children:

3. Roger, mentioned in father's
will of 1658.
4. Thomas, christened 10 February 1612 in East Markham;
married Elizabeth; buried 6 February 1639 in East Markham.

married William Mosse 24 October 1625 in East Markham; mentioned in father's will of 1658.
