About This Website

This site was developed by Michelle Boyd. I began research in New Netherland in about 1999-2000, when I learned that my ancestor, Alonzo H. Ennis, had ties to the colony. Much of the content on this site was chosen to be presented because of my personal experiences learning genealogy in this region and because of suggestions of others who have been there.

This site is about the people of New Netherland. They came not only from the Netherlands but other European countries and elsewhere. (Click here for more information about their origins.)

The first settlers arrived in about 1624. Dutch controlled the colony of New Netherland until 1664 when the English took over. (Click here to learn more about the history of New Netherland.)

The colony of New Netherland is in what is now the State of New York and included the present-day cities of New York City and Albany.

This was developed for my Instructional Design class (IP&T 564) at Brigham Young University.
