The Greens of Claverly
No record has been found yet for the earlier
marriage
of John Green, or for the death of his first wife. The only
marriage that
seems possible at this point is a marriage of John Green and
Anne Grindley
in Penn in 1795, but this will require more research.
John and Sarah had one child in Claverley,
John, who
was christened 10 November 1799. The baby, John died and was
buried 23
December 1800 in Claverley. John and Sarah have a second child,
William
Henry, who is born in Penn,
Staffordshire in 1809.
John Green died and was buried 4 April 1830 in Claverley. The
parish register
of Penn parish gives us the christening of William Henry Green:
1809 William, son of John and Sarah
Green,
February 5, baptized.
This is the family group for William Henry Green's parents:
John Green and Sarah Meredith
While there were Green families in Claverley in the late
1700s, no record
has been found in Claverley for John Green’s birth. If John
were about
thirty years old at the time of his second marriage, then he
would have
been born in about 1766.
John Green of Trysull
The best possibility for our John Green's (father of William
Henry Green)
birth is found in the parish registers of Trysull. Trysull is a
parish
in Staffordshire, just to the east of the parish of Claverley.
These are
the records relating to the John Green who was born in Trysull
in 1770:
William Green and Esther Bruff (son of John and
Elizabeth Green
of Trysull)
William Green of Trysull and Esther Bruff of Wombourn married in
Wombourn
27 August 1764.
Son, John, christened 28 March 1767 in Trysull.
Son, John, christened 16 April 1770 in Trysull.
John and Elizabeth Green
Son, Thomas, christened 26 June 1712 in Trysull
Son, John, christened 1 May 1714 in Trysull.
Son, Richard, christened 3 April 1718 in Trysull.
Twins, Elizabeth and Marey, christened 2 October 1720 in
Trysull.
Son, William, christened 28 August 1723 in Trysull.
John Green buried 9 May 1730 in Trysull.
Elizabeth, widow of John Green, buried 4 June 1730 in Trysull.
John Green of Alveley
The second possibility is found in the parish
of Alveley.
However, recent research in wills has made this possibility less
likely.
The John Green who was born in Alveley was the oldest living son
of his
father, John Green, at the time of his father's death. The will
of John
Green left considerable property in Alveley, and money to his
son, John
in 1809. However, our ancestor John Green was living in Penn
parish in
1809 at the birth of his son, William Henry, and later died in
Claverley.
William Henry was the only surviving son of John, but did not
seem to inherit
much property, as he is shown working as an agricultural laborer
in parish
and census records. Therefore, the John Green who was born in
Trysull seems
to be the most likely possibility.
John Green, the son of John and Esther Green,
was
christened in Alveley on 6 March 1759. John and Esther Green had
11 additional
children in the parish registers. Alveley is a parish just to
the south
of Claverley. John and Esther are not married in Alveley, but a
search
of the IGI gives us the marriage of John Green and Esther York
on 18 March
1754 in Wombourn. Wombourn is a parish in the county of
Staffordshire,
just to the east of the parish of Alveley, and immediately south
of Penn.
There are no Greens born in Wombourn in the period from
1666-1812. A review
of the parish register shows that they are listed as being both
of this
parish at the time of their marriage. Land records give us a
great clue.
John Green, the father, is listed as "John Green, the younger"
in the land
records of 1760. John Green, the elder married Anne Grove in
Quatford 30
December 1726.
Esther York, John Green, the younger's wife,
was the
daughter of John and Elizabeth York, and was christened 25
October 1725
in Wombourn. Her father, John York, was the son of Richard and
Margaret
York, and was christened 10 November 1692 in Wombourn. Esther's
mother
was Elizabeth Tongue.
These are the family groups for the John
Green who
is born in Alveley in 1759:
John and Esther Green
Additional research in probate records continues, but at this
point
John Green of Trysull seems like the most likely possibility for
our ancestor.
The following family groups show the Green families that may be of interest as we continue into records of the early 1700s and before:
